Colon cancer is highly treatable when caught early, with a five-year survival rate of roughly 90% for localized, early-stage disease, yet it is often difficult to diagnose because it can develop without symptoms or mimic benign conditions like hemorrhoids, infection, or constipation. Gastroenterologists interviewed identify rectal bleeding, or blood in the stool, as the number-one sign that should prompt medical evaluation rather than being dismissed. Other common symptoms include unintentional weight loss, severe abdominal pain, and persistent changes in bowel habits. The CDC recommends regular colorectal cancer screening beginning at age 45, or earlier for those at higher risk.
